IT CANNOT BE EMPHASISED TOO MUCH HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO CORRECTLY ATTRIBUTE THE WORKS AND RESPECT THE INTELLECTUAL PRPOERTY RIGHTS OF OTHERS. IF YOU FAIL TO DO SO USING THE RECOGNISED CONVENTIONS, YOU MAY BE JUDGED TO HAVE COMMITTED PLAGIARISM - THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST SERIOUS OFFENCES IN WRITING AND MAY BE JUDGED TO CONSTITUTE ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

PLAGIARISM

WHAT IS PLAGIARISM?

Plagiarism  is the presentation of someone else`s work as if it wereyour own. This occurs in several ways. The most obviousis the handling in of an essay or project which was written by someone else. However, this is extremely unusua. More commonly, plagiarism arises as the result of making unacknowledge quotations from the work of any author other than oneself. This may also include extensive use of someone else`s ideas or presentation, e.g lecture notes, without due acknoeledgement.

Since it is a central principle of all examination systems that the work submitted is that of the candidate, plagiarism is very severely punished by Examination Boards, and normally leads to the student being failed in the whole set of examinations. In some situation it may lead to the student being disconected from their programme of studies and, in more extreme cases, barred from further enrolment at the university.

AVOIDING PLAGIARISM

Plagiarism, is, however, very easy to avoid. The standard method which is accepted in all academic institutions is to acknowlege your sources.

This can be done in the following ways:

  • Seperate all direct quotations from your own work by using quotation marks.

  • Cite the precise source of the quotation in a note in brackets within the main text.

  • List all sources used in preparing the essay or project in a clear and detalailed bibliography at the end of your work.

  • Where you are not using a direct quotation, but are paraphrasing someone else`s argument, it is advisable to note the original souce in the same way as for a direct quotation, except that here quotation marks should not be used and specific page numbers are not required
